I am Dr. Michael Richman, double board certified cardiothoracic surgeon. Today we’re going talk about a topic that I got asked about all the time. But before we start, I want everybody to know that I take a high-dose statin because as a heart surgeon, I have no intention of dying from the disease that I treat. Cardiovascular disease is the #1 killer of men and women in the US. In the end, not only a longer, but also a better life matters. Preventing strokes, heart attacks, and limb loss from peripheral vascular disease and their accompanying disabilities are important and in this regard, statins can definitely do the job.
There does not seem to be a day that I don’t wake up in the morning and see something negative about statins. Concerns have been raised in the media and popular press about cognitive dysfunction and memory loss associated with statin use. Remember, The New York Post, the Epoch Times, the Free Beacon, Mother Jones and other “sources” are garbage. None of their articles are credible nor are they written by board-certified practicing preventative cardiologists, lipidologists or cardiothoracic surgeons with a medical license regarding anything having to do with heart disease. It would be nice to hear that statins are first-line evidence based drugs for the management of high cholesterol and reduce the risk of cardiovascular (CV) events.
For further information or a lipid consultation by me, please go to PaladinMDs because “it’s like having a doctor in the family.”
